As a wedding photographer here in Richmond, I’m a sucker for first dances. In my opinion, your first dance is one of the most special moments you can have with your partner not because it’s the first one that you will have as husband and wife, but because it is another way of displaying your love into song. This is why I consider picking a first dance song as one of the most important elements of planning your dream wedding.
No matter what theme you choose or what style of music you like the most, your first dance will always be a highlight on your special day. As the years go by, the music lyrics will trigger memories of your big day for the rest of your lives. It can build upon the many stories you tell of your marriage. This is why I want to share some tips on how to pick the best song for your first dance.
Consider The Memories
Choosing a song that has sentimental value will make your first dance extra special. Ask yourself, do you already have a song that you love already? Many couples look for a song that is somehow related to their relationship. Perhaps the tune played on the radio during your first kiss or a vacation that will last a lifetime.
Sometimes you both really like a popular song and want to consider something different. I can definitely understand that everyone wants their first dance song to be non-cliche. I remember the year when Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” came out. It was really popular for the following year because everyone resonated so much with the lyrics. And 8 years later, it is still considered to me one of the most popular songs (we’ve included it on our list). It’s totally okay to still pick a popular song, but it’s definitely okay if you want something that is uniquely you.
Think about if you’ve dated long-distance or if you’ve had an unusual start to your relationship, consider key moments that have shaped your relationship. Find lyrics that tell your unique love story You’ll also want to find a tune that’s not too fast, nor too slow, is easy and enjoyable to dance to, and features appropriate lyrics.
