Getting engaged is a significant milestone in your relationship as a couple, and there is no better way to commemorate it than having your engagement photos. So you booked your session and now it comes to the next task: What do I wear?
Figuring out what to wear for your engagement session can be hard sometimes. There’s so much to choose from and if you’ve never had your photos taken before, it may be a completely different ballgame than what you’re used to. Being a wedding photographer here in Richmond, I have always loved being able to help my couples make the decision on what to wear for their engagement session and I would like to share five tips to help you with the selection process:
Be Comfortable!
If you feel that an outfit that you picked doesn’t feel like you, it’s okay to not wear it! Being uncomfortable during your engagement session will definitely reflect in your pictures. Yes! You want to look amazing and you can look amazing without sacrificing the comfortability of being yourself and wearing something that you can move around in with ease.
Wear Something That Stands Out!
As mentioned, your engagement photos should be aligned with your personality as a couple, and if both of you love to stand out, there’s no point in holding back. Go for something bold clothing but is also complementary to each other to show everyone how both of you are designed to be unapologetically gorgeous in what you wear. I do recommend to avoid wearing bright colors or clothing with clashing patterns. I’d recommend if one of you wears an outfit with a pattern that the other wears something more solid. Toya & Ryan did it perfectly for their engagement session!
Tanner wore a softer pattern to compliment Sara’s floral romper. It was great!
Jassmyn & Josh did something a little similar. Jassmyn wore a lovely floral dress while Josh wore a polo and jeans.
When in doubt, always go with neutral clothing
The great thing about neutral color clothing is that it is pretty easy to coordinate. Blacks are a personal favorite of mine. Brown and Grey are great too!
Complement Your Partner’s Style
I know it might sound amazing to have matching clothes with your partner during an engagement session, but this is not quite ideal for portraits. Instead, complement each other’s style with colors and solid prints that look good together. That way, you can bring each other’s outfits out for perfection.
Pick Two
Being a wedding photographer in Richmond, I always recommend that my couples pick two outfits for their session. First, it gives you the opportunity to try a different look and secondly it allows for you to get a brief break in between outfit changes. Going for a formal look to start and then changing into something more casual is a good way to end the session. Definitely limit your outfits to two so that you can maximize your time for pictures and so that your photos can remain looking cohesive.
I hope these tips help you decide what to wear for your engagement photos. Still looking for a photographer for your engagement session? Chat with me and let’s book a session right away!
